Before washing, know the material first — canvas, leather, and mesh need very different care.
Canvas shoes: water-washable, focus on removing yellowing
- Can be soaked and washed directly.
- Gently brush with mild detergent; use baking soda paste on yellowed spots.
- Remove laces and insoles, wash separately.
- Dry in the shade, never in direct sun.
Leather shoes: never soak in water
- Leather shoes should never be soaked — they can harden and crack.
- Wipe with a damp cloth; use a leather-specific cleaner on dirty spots.
- After cleaning, dry then apply leather oil/cream.
- Dry in the shade, away from heat sources.
Mesh shoes: gentle wash, prevent deformation
- Mesh is delicate — brush gently, do not scrub hard.
- Use neutral detergent, avoid harsh materials.
- Stuff with paper or a shoe tree to keep shape.
- Dry in the shade, away from hot dryers.
General principles
Laces and insoles are best washed separately. All shoe types should be dried in the shade, not direct sun. For delicate or expensive shoes, it is safer to use a professional laundry service.
